Transferring USDT Gas-Free on TRON
USDT transfers on the TRON network consume Energy. When a wallet lacks sufficient Energy, the network burns TRX to cover the transaction fees. Energy Rental provides a more efficient alternative, allowing you to borrow the required Energy for a fraction of the cost. This guide explains how to use JustLend, TRON’s official lending protocol, to make your USDT transfers significantly more cost-effective.
How Energy Rental works
Section titled “How Energy Rental works”When you send USDT on TRON, the transaction consumes Energy. The exact amount depends on the recipient:
- ~65,000 Energy — if the recipient address already holds USDT
- ~130,000 Energy — if the recipient address has never held USDT before (a new or inactive address)
If your wallet does not have sufficient Energy from staking TRX, the network covers the cost by burning TRX from your balance.
Energy Rental lets you borrow Energy from a pool for a short duration (as little as one hour). You pay a small rental fee plus a refundable security deposit in TRX. The result: your USDT transfer uses the rented Energy instead of burning your TRX, and your deposit is returned when the rental ends.
Looking for GasFree.io?
Section titled “Looking for GasFree.io?”If you are looking for the service that allows you to pay for transfer fees directly in USDT rather than renting Energy, you might be thinking of GasFree.io. While Energy Rental via JustLend is ideal for users holding TRX, GasFree.io offers a seamless alternative for users who only hold stablecoins. For a full breakdown of that service, see our GasFree.io Overview.
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”Before starting, confirm you have:
- A TronLink wallet (browser extension or mobile app) — or any TRC-20 compatible wallet
- A TRX balance to cover both the rental fee and the security deposit (having at least 5–10 TRX is a safe buffer)
- The USDT you intend to send
Step-by-step: rent Energy and send USDT
Section titled “Step-by-step: rent Energy and send USDT”Step 1: Open the JustLend Energy Rental portal
Section titled “Step 1: Open the JustLend Energy Rental portal”- Open your browser and navigate to the official JustLend Energy Rental page: app.justlend.org/energy.
- Click Connect Wallet and approve the connection request in TronLink. Make sure you are connecting the wallet that will be sending the USDT.
- The portal will display the current rental rate per unit of Energy and the available pool size.
Step 2: Configure the rental
Section titled “Step 2: Configure the rental”- In the Energy Amount field, enter the amount you need:
- 65,000 if you are sending to an address that already holds USDT
- 130,000 if you are unsure, or sending to a new address that has never held USDT
- Set the Duration to the shortest available option — typically 1 hour. This minimises the rental cost for a single transfer.
- Review the displayed rental fee and security deposit in TRX. The security deposit is fully refundable when the rental ends properly.
- Click Rent Now and confirm the transaction in TronLink. The fee and deposit will be deducted from your TRX balance immediately.
- Once confirmed (within seconds), the rented Energy will appear in your wallet’s resource balance.
Step 3: Send your USDT transfer
Section titled “Step 3: Send your USDT transfer”- Open TronLink and go to your USDT balance.
- Tap or click Send and enter the recipient’s TRON address.
- Enter the USDT amount and review the transaction details. You should see that the transaction will use Energy rather than burn TRX.
- Confirm the transfer. The transaction will complete in seconds, consuming the rented Energy — your TRX balance stays intact.
Step 4: End the rental early (optional)
Section titled “Step 4: End the rental early (optional)”If you selected a longer duration but finished your transfers quickly, you can return to the JustLend portal and click End Now to stop the rental. This returns your security deposit and any proportionally unused rental fee. For a 1-hour rental this is usually unnecessary, but ending early is always recommended for longer durations.
What if I send USDT frequently?
Section titled “What if I send USDT frequently?”For users who send USDT more than a few times per month, staking TRX to generate your own Energy is more cost-efficient than renting each time. Freezing approximately 5,000–10,000 TRX generates enough sustained Energy to cover daily USDT transfers with no rental fees at all.
Refer to the Staking guide to understand how to freeze TRX and calculate how much Energy your stake will produce. The Energy & Fee Calculator can give you a precise break-even point based on current network rates.
Frequently asked questions
Section titled “Frequently asked questions”| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do I still need TRX at all? | Yes — a small amount for the rental fee and security deposit. The deposit is fully refundable when your rental ends correctly. Keep at least 5–10 TRX as a safe buffer. |
| What if I rent Energy but forget to send the USDT in time? | The rented Energy expires at the end of the duration. If the rental expires without you ending it manually, the security deposit may be partially forfeited. Always click End Now when you are finished to secure your refund. |
| How much Energy do I need for a USDT transfer? | About 65,000 Energy if the recipient already holds USDT. About 130,000 Energy if the recipient has never held USDT. When in doubt, rent 130,000. |
| What if my rental transaction fails? | The transaction reverts and your TRX is not deducted. Check that you have sufficient TRX for both the fee and deposit, then retry. |
| Can I rent Energy for tokens other than USDT? | Yes. Any TRC-20 token transfer that consumes Energy can benefit from rental. The required Energy amount varies by token contract. |
